Finland’s longest road tunnel opens in Helsinki today
The longest road tunnel in Finland will be opened to traffic today - Tuesday.
The 1.5-kilometre tunnel will link the Outer Ring Road III with the purpose-built Vuosaari Harbour, now under construction at the eastern end of Helsinki, routing heavy traffic away from the city centre.
The new route is bound to reduce traffic congestion on the Inner Ring Road, Kehä I.
When the Vuosaari Harbour has been opened, some 10,000 vehicles a day are expected to use the route, coming from the harbour, the logistics area, the business park, and the district of Vuosaari itself.
The new port is scheduled to be opened at the end of 2008, after which most of the shipping operations in the West Harbour and Sörnäinen Harbour will be moved there, freeing up these areas for urban redevelopment.
