Finland denounces violence in Iran
Stubb summons Iranian Ambassador to Foreign Ministry
Finland has condemned acts of violence committed by Iran against protesters who have taken to the streets alleging fraud in the recent Presidential election.
Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Stubb (Nat. Coalition Party) made the Finnish stand known to Iranian Ambassador Reza Nazarahar on Tuesday.
The Ambassador had been called to the Finnish Foreign Ministry over the situation that followed the elections. The Foreign Ministry reported on the meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
Stubb appealed for a peaceful solution to the conflict, and spoke on behalf of freedom of speech. He also urged Iran to free all imprisoned opposition leaders.
The Finnish Foreign Minister also called for a recount of the ballots, in light of questions raised about possible fraud.
Numerous people have been killed in demonstrations that followed the elections, and hundreds have been arrested.
Iran has accused EU countries of fomenting unrest.
