Finland has cheapest cars within EU... before tax
 |
When comparing the pre-tax prices, the cheapest cars in the entire EU area are found in Finland.
According to a recent report by the European Commission, price convergence for cars continues to improve in the member states of the European Union. However, price differences for certain models remain significant.
For example, a Fiat Punto costs almost 30% more in Germany than in Finland. In Germany, pre-tax prices are among the most expensive within the Union. Conversely, the high level of tax attached to cars bought in Finland means that retail prices are often towards the top end of the European scale.
In the case of the Fiat, for instance, the pre-tax price here is around EUR 7,700, compared with nearly EUR 10,000 in Germany. After tax, the roles are reversed, with the Finnish consumer paying EUR 12,600 for the car, as against EUR 11,500 in Germany. The Irish, however, have it even worse: a Fiat Punto will cost them nearly EUR 14,300 after tax.
