Iraq is the world’s most restless country, while Norway is the most peaceful. This was the finding of a study published on Wednesday. The newly-devised Global Peace Index (GPi) project uses 24 indicators, such as violence, organised crime, or a nation’s level of military expenditure, to rank 121 nations according to their relative peacefulness.
Besides Norway, also New Zealand, Japan, a number of central European countries, plus the Nordic Countries rank as the most peaceful countries in the world. Finland stands at number six on the list.
After Iraq, the most restless countries are Sudan, Israel, and Russia (118th). Ranked at number 96, the United States also classifies as one of the least peaceful nations. The UK is also down in the pack at No.49, between Morocco and Mozambique.
The GPi was compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, in conjunction with an international team of academics and peace experts. The Unit is affiliated with The Economist weekly. "This is a wake-up call to all the world’s leaders", said Steve Killelea, an Australian IT entrepreneur and philanthropist, who commissioned the study.
The conclusion of the project was that small, stable nations belonging to territorial coalitions like the EU are likely to come out on top as the most peaceful countries. In promoting peace, the most important components are the level of income and education, the study establishes.
