Finland to become net contributor in EU stimulus package
Rural development funding declines
Finland is becoming a net contributor in the EUR 5 billion stimulus package of the European Union. The reason for this is that the proportion of rural development funding in the package has been cut as preparations have moved forward.
At the end of January, EUR 1.5 billion was being earmarked for this purpose, but in the new proposal by the Czech Republic, the EU Presidency-holder, there was only EUR 1.1 billion budgeted for the purpose. Diplomatic sources say that this means that the amount of money that Finland is getting from the package will decline to the point that Finland will actually become a net contributor.
The rural development funds are intended for projects such as improving broadband connections in the countryside.
