Aero Airlines, an Estonian-registered subsidiary of the Finnish airline Finnair, is to be shut down in its present form, writes the Jyväskylä-based newspaper Keskisuomalainen.
According to Finnair, Aero is giving up its entire fleet of aircraft by the beginning of next year. Aero’s turboprops have been in use for 15 years, and Finnair has made a practice of replacing planes when they reach that age.
No replacements have been bought, but some of the routes flown by Aero are to be replaced by Finnair’s newer Embraer 170 and 190 planes. In addition, Finncomm Airlines is to fly on some of the routes that are now served by Aero.
Finnair has not made any final decisions on the future of Aero. One option is for the airline to concentrate on holiday flights.
Finnair launched Aero’s domestic flights in Finland in 2003. Aero has flown to a total of 13 destinations. In Finland, destinations include Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Tampere, Turku, Kokkola, and Vaasa. At one point Aero flew up to 40 flights a day.
