Finnish experts visit GTS Finnjet in India

The Finnjet story refuses to go away.
      A group of Finnish experts attempting to rescue GTS Finnjet from being scrapped recently visited India in order to assess the present condition of the vessel.
      The Turku entrepreneur Johnny Sid reports that three former Finnjet employees, who wish to remain anonymous, visited the Alang breakers’ yard in Western India at the end of last month.
     
The photos taken by the group show that a number of holes have been drilled in the hull of the vessel at the level of its car deck in order to haul the ship further onshore with the help of chains.
      According to Sid, some of the vessel’s furnishings have been removed.
     
”Nevertheless, the ship could still be rescued”, believes Sid, who is trying to raise funds in order to bring Finnjet to Turku, where the former car and passenger ferry, once the fastest vessel of its kind in the world, could serve as a floating dormitory or a hotel.
      Finnjet has been beached at the breakers' yard in Western India for almost two months.
