A young Finnish man who died in Spain last month is believed to have been trying to smuggle cocaine inside his body.
Finnish customs authorities say that the man was travelling with a friend. Members of the group had packed about 50 grams of cocaine and swallowed the packages.
At the airport one of the two felt unwell and decided not to board the plane. He was later found dead at the airport.

The investigation into the cause of death is not yet complete, but Helsingin Sanomat has learned that he was probably poisoned by cocaine that leaked from the packages.
The other man who got on the plane began to feel ill during the flight. Customs authorities say that he told a flight attendant that he was feeling bad, and said that he had swallowed cocaine. In Finland he was taken to hospital from the airport.

At the hospital the man excreted the packages, which were confiscated by customs. He now faces charges of aggravated drug crime.
“Smuggling drugs inside the body is very dangerous. The rupture of a package inside the body can lead to immediate poisoning and death”, says Tero Virtanen of Finnish Customs.

Finnish Customs reports that it has uncovered about 30 cases in the past three years in which drugs have been smuggled into Finland inside the body.
The authorities say that the man who died in Spain and his friend do not have any significant criminal record.
