Finnish newspaper readership figures remain stable

According to a National Readership Survey issued on Tuesday by the Finnish Audit Bureau of Circulations, the readerships of the country’s most important newspapers have remained stable.
Compared with the previous survey, no statistically significant change has taken place in the readerships of any newspaper or its supplement.
In previous surveys, particularly the supplements of newspapers were found to have lost readers. Now the decline appears to have stopped - at least for the time being.
”The Finnish newspapers continue to be very strong. I do not believe that any significant development would be about to happen relating to their circulations”, says Kristiina Markkula, the head of the Finnish Newspapers Association.
The largest newspaper by circulation continues to be Helsingin Sanomat, with an average readership of 970,000. Next come the two late-edition tabloids Ilta-Sanomat with 745,000 readers and Iltalehti with a readership of 677,000.
The readerships of Finnish periodicals have largely remained stable as well.
Among general interest periodicals, only OHO! (-23,3 %) and Katso (-17,5 %) have lost a significant number of their readers.
Pirkka and Yhteishyvä have continued to be the most widely read Finnish periodicals. Pirkka has about 2.6 million readers, while the readership of Yhteishyvä has grown by 7.2 % to 1.7 million. Both are free periodicals and linked to retail chains.
The National Readership Survey, involving 182 newspapers and periodicals, is commissioned by the publishers and by the representatives of marketing communications services.
