The Finnish rock band The Rasmus has made history with its latest album Dead Letters, which is now in tenth place on Britain’s list of popular albums. This is the first time that an album by a Finnish band has made it into Britain’s top ten.
Dead Letters was released on April 12, and in the first week it rose to number 21. Meanwhile, The Rasmus’ single In The Shadows has remained number three on the singles chart.
The success of the album bodes well for the group’s conquest of Britain, as well as a planned public relations trip to the United States.
Last weekend the group was featured on the BBC’s Top of the Pops programme, and its four concerts in Britain this month have been sold out.
The Rasmus was formed nine years ago, and Dead Letters is its fifth album. It has done well in a number of other European countries, and is scheduled for release in the United States and Japan later this spring.

The Finnish rock band HIM is currently on the Top 40 Rock Albums list with four albums. Other Finnish groups to do well on the British singles chart include Darude and Bomfunk MC’s.
Finnish bands have been trying to break into international markets since the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. One band, Wigwam, won praise from British critics, and in 1984 Hanoi Rocks actually made Britain’s singles’ chart with its cover version of CCR’s Up Around the Bend.
