Finnish songwriter contributes to album topping the Billboard 200 Chart in the U.S.
Song co-written by Teemu Brunila appears on Trey Songz’s latest album release
Songwriter Teemu Brunila from Turku has become the first Finn to have co-written a song that is featured on a number one record on the American Billboard 200 album chart.
A song called Never Again, co-written by Brunila, is found on the American R&B artist Trey Songz’s album Chapter V, which, as a new entry, became this week’s top-selling album on the official Billboard 200 chart.
In the United States, Songz's fifth studio album shifted 135,000 copies.
Chapter V entered the UK Albums Chart at number 10.
“I hope that this signals a benchmark for Teemu, which will lead to other releases”, comments Music Finland project manager Sami Häikiö.
Music Finland is a music export organisation that promotes the exporting of works by Finnish songwriters for example through its Biisilinna (“Song Castle”) songwriting camps, which also led to Brunila’s international connections.
Brunila himself declined to comment on the list achievement.
The song itself was created when Brunila visited Songz’s recording session in Los Angeles.
Apart from the Finn, Songz himself, the record’s producer Troy Taylor, as well as songwriters J. Hart and Matt Prime took part in creating the track.
The late soul, R&B, and funk legend Curtis Mayfield is also listed as one of the co-writers, as Never Again features a brass sample from one his songs.
“The songwriting process for American hit albums is often a group effort. The songs are worked to perfection through the input of several contributors”, Häikiö explains.
Teemu Brunila, 35, has profiled himself as a songwriter after the Finnish band The Crash - led by him - split up in 2009.
At present, Brunila has a contract with Britain’s largest music publishing company Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
In Britain, Brunila has two number two list entries under his belt, as his songs have appeared on albums by the British boyband JLS.
In Finland he has written songs for example for Jenni Vartiainen and Anna Abreu.
This is the first time that a Finn has appeared in some shape or form at the No. 1 spot on the American album charts.
Michael Monroe and Timo Kaltio came close in 1991.
They contributed to the Guns N’ Roses album Use Your Illusion I, which climbed to number two on the list; Monroe as a guest musician and Kaltio as the co-writer of a song.
The highest position ever by a Finnish recording artist on the U.S. Billboard 200 list belongs to HIM. The "love metal" band reached the No.12 spot with their 2005 album Venus Doom.
