Thousands of Finnish citizens on holiday on the Greek island of Crete have been spared the brunt of flooding there.
"I was in contact with our honorary consul in Crete, who said that the Finns are not in trouble", said Finnish Consul Leena Vuorio at the Finnish Embassy in Athens on Wednesday.
"We moved customers from one hotel to another, but nobody was in danger", said Jukka Salama, CEO of the Finnish tour operator Sun Tours.
Kari Savolainen, a tourist at the Agia Pelagia resort town about 20 kilometres from Iraklion, said on Wednesday that there was no problem. "Yesterday, Tuesday, there was one heck of a storm and rain came down, but today it was calmer. The only flooding we saw was on television."

The flooding affected the northern coast of West Crete the worst, with the most serious situation west of Iraklion.
"It has been quite rainy in Greece, with water coming down on all of the islands", Vuorio says.
She has not been contacted by any Finns over the flooding.

Crete is a favourite summer holiday destination for Finns. For instance, Finn Tours houses visitors in 35 hotels in western Crete. Sun Tours has 700 tourists in Crete, Finn Tours has 1,000, and Tjäreborg has hundreds. The main tourist season in Crete will continue for a few weeks, and flights have been booked solid.
There have been no cancellations over the floods.
