Around 3.7 million Finns listen to the radio every day.
According to a national radio survey by Finnpanel, in 2011 the Finns spent an average of three hours and eight minutes per day listening to radio broadcasts.
Ten years ago, the nation’s average daily dose of radio content was half an hour longer.
Last year, 36 per cent of the listeners tuned in to the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE’s Radio Suomi station. The figure indicates a slight decrease from the year before.
The commercial nationwide Radio Nova station managed to maintain its listener figure at 11 per cent.
YLE’s Radio 1 increased its number of listeners slightly with eight per cent of the Finnish radio listeners tuning in to the station, which has a format of talk programmes and classical music (concerts by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra), jazz, folk, and world music.
Iskelmäradio, a commercial light music station, enjoyed a 7% share of all the listeners.
On an average day, the most popular channel among the female listeners was The Voice, to which 63 per cent of the women tuned in. Radio Rock, in turn, attracted 71 per cent of the male radio audience.
One in four radio listeners had also tried the Spotify streaming service.
The most eager radio listeners were the over-55- and over-65-year-olds.
Kids aged 9 to 14 spent the least time listening to the radio.
