There is a large potential market for Finnish expertise in energy efficiency in China, according to the Finnish consulting organisation Finpro.

Energy efficiency is one of the main focal points of China’s new five year plan, alongside economic growth, and Finland is trying to take advantage of this demand. Finpro organised an energy efficiency seminar in Beijing, which was opened by Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (Centre) on Wednesday.
China is short on energy and has been under intense pressure to improve its environmental standards.
"Economic growth clearly makes one look at things from a new perspective", said Vanhanen. He stated that energy efficiency is one of the few fields where Finland’s cold climate is actually an advantage. Energy efficiency has always been a priority in Finland.
"We have credibility in this field", he said.
Finpro says that many Finnish companies have experienced growth in Chinese markets, where there is demand for energy efficiency. For example, the window manufacturer Alavuden ikkuna, which was originally a small business, has increased its production tenfold.

Prime Minister Vanhanen is in China on an official visit. the primary focus of the trip is on the promotion of Finnsih exports.
On Wednesday he also witnessed the announcement of a high-profile deal for the supply of lifts by the Finnish manufacturer Kone. The company won the contract to build all 26 elevators in the new Olympic Stadium in Beijing. The summer Olympics will be held in Beijing in 2008.
The announcement of the deal took place on the premises of the Chinese National Congress, and the event was hosted by a famous Chinese television star.
