Five universities in Finland were included on a ranking list of the world’s top 500 universities.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai list, emphasises achievements such as Nobel prizes and articles published in scientific journals. It was released for the tenth time.
The highest-ranked Finnish university is the University of Helsinki, which shares 73rd place along with the French Ecole Normale Superieure, Leiden University in The Netherlands, and Sweden’s Uppsala University.
In addition to the University of Helsinki, Finnish institutions making the list include the University of Oulu, the University of Turku, the University of Eastern Finland, and the University of Jyväskylä.
Aalto University, which was on the list in 2010, did not make it this year or last year in the overall rankings. However, in a comparison of specific fields, Aalto University ranked among the top 200 schools of engineering and economics.
Topping the list was Harvard University in the United States, and US universities figured prominently among the highest-ranking institutions. Britain’s Cambridge was fifth and Oxford was tenth.
The highest-ranking Asian university was the University of Tokyo, which is back among the top 20. Universities in China have improved their standings, with 42 institutions on the list – compared with 38 for Britain, for instance. However, none of the Chinese universities were included among the top 100.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities is published annually by the Center for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.
