Tampere District Court on Thursday sentenced former ski jumper and Olympic gold medalist Matti Nykänen to four months in prison for beating his wife Mervi Nykänen.
In addition to the four months, Nykänen will also have to serve 13 months of a previous sentence for aggravated assault. Nykänen had been released in September after serving half that sentence, because the crime had been a first offence.
Nykänen had stabbed and injured an acquaintance during an evening of drinking in August 2004.
In its verdict and sentence on Thursday, the court found the blows to his wife’s head to be especially deplorable.
Alcohol was involved in both cases.
