Guitarist Jukka Tolonen gets 2-year sentence for aggravated assault and drug offences
Jukka Tolonen, arguably one of the finest virtuoso guitarists Finland has produced, was sentenced on Monday to a prison term of two years and three months for aggravated assault and drug offences.
The 56-year-old musician had already admitted in court that he had stabbed a 30-year-old woman three times with a kitchen knife and had given her amphetamines.
The assault took place in December 2006 at Tolonen’s apartment in the Malminkartano district of Helsinki.
According to Tolonen, he had become enraged when the woman, with whom he was living at the time, sought to leave the premises.
Jukka Tolonen was a founding member of the progressive rock band Tasavallan Presidentti, established in 1969.
He also released a number of solo albums and remained a hugely influential and respected musician, despite being out of the limelight in recent years.
