Candidates still have time to answer questions

The candidate selection engine of Helsingin Sanomat has been opened in advance of the municipal elections.
The Vaalikone website asks voters opinions on municipal issues, such as what child day care should cost, where large shopping centres should be built, and what should be done about graffiti.
Voters give their answers to 20 topical questions, and the engine lists the candidates whose views are closest, and farthest to those of the voter. It is also possible to read reasons that a candidate has given for not giving an answer to the question itself.

The HS candidate selection engine also includes an additional service called “candidates in political space”, produced by Bayes IT. The service allows the voter to see where the candidates are located with respect to each other based on the answers that they gave. The service is built on the foundation of the BayMiner analysis tool.

The engine covers 17 municipalities in the Helsinki region and nearby areas: Espoo, Helsinki, Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Kauniainen, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Lohja, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi, Pornainen, Porvoo, Riihimäki, Sipoo, Tuusula, Vantaa and Vihti.

Not all candidates in these cities and municipalities have submitted answers to the questions. Candidates who still want to participate have until Monday, October 6th to do so. To get the user codes necessary for submitting answers, candidates should send an e-mail to vaalit@hs.fi.
