President Tarja Halonen remains the favourite in next year’s Presidential election.
A poll commissioned by YLE Television News nevertheless indicates that Halonen’s popularity has declined by eight percentage points from a survey conducted six months ago. Still, with 53% support, she would take the presidency in the first round, without a need for a runoff.
The poll gives Centre Party’s candidate, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, and the National Coalition Party’s Sauli Niinistö, Vice President of the European Investment Bank, 20% each.
Heidi Hautala (Green) would get three percent, and Suvi-Anne Siimes (Left Alliance) would get two percent of the vote.
The Swedish People’s Party’s Henrik Lax, the Christian Democratic Party’s Päivi Räsänen, and the True Finns’ Raimo Vistbacka would get one percent each.
In a possible second round, Halonen would beat Vanhanen 67%-33%, and Niinistö by a margin of 70%-30%.
The poll, conducted by the market research company Taloustutkimus, involved interviews with more than 2,400 Finns.
