Roses, a painting by Helene Schjerfbeck from 1922, was sold at Sotheby's in London on Wednesday for £151,250 (nearly EUR 175,000), making appreciably more than the auction house estimate.
The estimated selling price had been between £80,000 and £120,000.
Two other paintings by the prominent Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela also went under the hammer at the auction of Scandinavian Art.
Gallen-Kallela's Taos, New Mexico Under Snow sold for £23,750, and his Snowy Landscape from 1908 made £56,450.
Hugo Simberg's Seascape in Moonlight fetched £21,875.
What drew the attention of buyers at Sotheby's was the fact that the Schjerfbeck painting contained on the other side of the canvas an unfinished version of the artist's Gypsy Woman.
Schjerfbeck painted two other versions of the same subject in 1919.
