The Swedish media giant Bonnier handed out its 2005 Awards for Journalism in Finland on Wednesday.
Journalist Ilkka Malmberg, 52, of Verkkoliite, the monthly magazine supplement of Helsingin Sanomat, was the winner of the Bonnier journalists' prize for Story of the Year in 2005.
Malmberg won the prize for his article Perhetyttö ("Girl of Good Family") telling about Mervi Nykänen, the wife of the Finnish ski-jumping icon Matti Nykänen. The story showed how little people really know about celebrities. While telling the story of Mervi Nykänen, it also became an account of the recent history of Finnish society.
"I am a journalist for 24 hours a day. I always think journalistically and see potential stories everywhere", says Malmberg, the father of four children.
The Bonnier prize comprises three categories: Journalist of the Year, Story of the Year, and a third prize for the best innovation in the field, and all were based on material from last year.
Editor-in-chief Pekka Seppänen was named Journalist of the Year for his interesting columns in the Finnish economic journal Talouselämä.
The prize for innovations in journalism went to the team that produces Uutismixi, a youth-oriented news and public affairs programme produced by the public-service broadcaster YLE, and to producer Hannele Muuronen. Uutismixi was launched in 2005.
The annual prize in each series is EUR 7,500. This was the fifth time when the Bonnier journalistic awards were handed out in Finland.
