Helsinki aspires to become Fairtrade City

 print this
The City of Helsinki took a step on Monday towards achieving the status of a Fairtrade City. The City Board voted on the matter on Monday.
In order to receive Fairtrade City status, Helsinki has to use Fairtrade teas and coffees in the city hall and all of its functions.
In addition to that, the city also has to use regularly some other Fairtrade products, such as fruit.
The final decision with regard to switching to use Fairtrade products will be made by the City Council.

In Finland, for example the cities of Tampere, Pori, Joensuu, Lohja, and Espoo have already been awarded the Fairtrade City mark.
Elsewhere in Europe, the cities of London, Madrid, Copenhagen, and Oslo, among others, have earned the right to use the title. Wales became the world's first Fairtrade nation in the summer of 2008.
