Helsinki diver finds submerged body during exercise
A City of Helsinki Rescue Department diver unexpectedly discovered the body of a man in the sea in Ruoholahti in the west of Helsinki on Sunday.
The corpse was found during a routine exercise at a depth of nine metres, about ten metres from the shore.
The body was raised to the surface, and police are working to establish the man’s identity and the cause of death.
“The man, between 40 and 50 years of age, was wearing a backpack, ordinary clothing, and running shoes. It is hard to determine the age because the skin had begun to get soft in the water, and his hair was falling out”, says Reijo Riihelä of the Rescue Department.
The body was found in front of the Hotel Seaside, where the sea is not completely frozen over. “We change the locations of our exercises fairly often, so the discovery was an amazing coincidence.”
According to the Rescue Department, similar chance discoveries are made from time to time.
A few years ago divers were taking part in an exercise in Helsinki’s South Harbour, where a diver found a human foot. After forensic examinations, police eventually ascertained to whom the foot belonged.
