The opening of the public skating rink on the square in front of Helsinki’s main railway station took place on Saturday afternoon.
According to Kenneth Sipilä, who was responsible for ticket sales, business was brisk from the outset, and around half of the customers on skates were foreigners.
The rink, which will remain in place - weather permitting - until the end of March 2008, is open for skaters from Mondays to Thursdays from 10:00 to 21:00, on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 22:00, and on Sundays from 10:00 to 20:00.
Admission is EUR 4.00 for adults and EUR 2.00 for children , and skates can be hired for an additional fee (EUR 5.00/EUR 3.50).
The area covered by ice is 56 metres by 30 metres, or slightly smaller than a hockey rink. Ball-games are not permitted on the ice.
At present there is only a large container at the side of the ice for ticket sales and skate rentals, but after Christmas a café will be added.
The ticket office will then move there, and the present premises will be used as a changing room.
