Helsinki plans to extend its Metro system to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport

 print this
The City of Helsinki is to start planning the construction of a new underground Metro line from the railway station of Pasila to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.
Mayor Jussi Pajunen is proposing to the City Board on Monday, that the City Planning Department together with the public transport committee should start a general plan for a new commuter line starting at Pasila and running to the airport.
Currently, there is a preliminary plan made in 2003 for a new northbound "Töölö subway" starting at Kamppi, in the centre of the city, and ending at the Pasila railway station. The two other stations would be one between Hesperiankatu and the Töölö Market Square, and another in the Meilahti hospital area.
Another alternative mass transit link to the airport that has been suggested is the Marja urban line (also called the "ring track") which would connect the present Martinlaakso commuter line with the main railway line north via a loop taking in the airport. Helsinki-Vantaa is not currently served by any fast links with the capital; passengers must rely on bus or taxi services.
