The week started with a piece of good news for Anaheim Ducks and Finland wingman Teemu Selänne.
The veteran ice hockey player’s operated jaw was X-rayed on Monday; everything looked good, and the wires from his upper teeth were removed.
“Training and skating will commence today (Monday). I will play my first matches perhaps next week”, said a selighted Selänne.
The news of Selänne’s quick recovery is definitely to the liking of his NHL team Anaheim Ducks, but it will also warm the hearts of Finnish ice hockey fans. Now Selänne will manage to get in some valuable playing time on the NHL ice before the Olympics.
Selänne’s jaw was fractured when a slapshot by his teammate, defenseman Ryan Whitney, took a surprising deflection off the stick of Boston's and hit Selänne full in the face.
At first it seemed that Selänne’s trip to Vancouver might be threatened. Fortunately this turned out not to be the case.
“I will return on the ice wearing a full mask, yes”, Selänne laughed.
