Former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari has been awarded the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize.
The prize includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a cheque for EUR 122,000.
The award was given in recognition of Ahtisaari’s lifelong work on behalf of world peace.
The Félix Houphouët-Boigny Prize was established in 1989 with the thought that wars begin in people’s minds, and therefore, the defence of peace has to be created in the minds of people.
The prize is granted every few years, and it is often shared among several people. The first recipients in 1991 were Nelson Mandela and South Africa’s’ president at the time, Frederik W. de Klerk.
