According to figures released on Frinday by Statistics Finland, the value of new orders in manufacturing was up by 22.1% in April compared with the situation one year previously.
In the period from January to April of this year, the increase on 2009 was 12.6%.
The most powerful growth was registered in orders for the manufacture of paper, and paper and board products, where the increase was as much as 37.3% year-on-year, although this figure must also be seen in the light of the stevedores' strike in March, which caused an exceptionally large number of orders to be deferred into April.
In the textiles and textile products branch orders went up by 22.4% and in the metals industry by 17.6 per cent. Nevertheless, especially in the metals branch the value of orders remains fairly low and the growth figure is in part explained by the very weak situation in the comparison year. The value of orders in the chemical industry rose by 11.4 per cent in April, relative to 2009.
In March 2010, the year-on-year increase in manufacturing orders was 23.9%, so the April growth is not quite as large, but experts point out that swings on the individual monthly level are typical and derive from the fact that long-term orders spreading over several months are in fact classified according to the month in which they were received.
