Ice hockey player Jere Karalahti has been charged over a new narcotics offence, reports the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE.
The case will be handled by the Helsinki District Court in a couple of weeks’ time. According to YLE, Karalahti has been tied in with an investigation into a case dating back to 2007. The principal defendant in the case is accused, among other things, of an aggravated narcotics offence.
In March Karalahti, a former player with the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators in the NHL, was sentenced to a suspended prison term of one year and eight months earlier this year for complicity in an aggravated drug crime. The hearing of that case will continue in the Court of Appeal.
Presently Karalahti is employed by the German ice hockey team Hamburg Freezers. Karalahti’s agent Juuso Pulliainen tells Helsingin Sanomat that the German team has not reacted in any way to the news of Karalahti’s latest crime suspicions.
“The Germans are calmly waiting to see how the case progresses. Jere will take part in the next training sessions as normal”, Pulliainen says.
So far Karalahti has appeared with the German team in 15 games, in which he has collected 6 points (3 goals and 3 assists).
The Finnish defenseman, who has always been famous for his temper, is already his new team’s penalty-king with 62 minutes spent in the penalty box.
