Jukka Savolainen has been appointed as the new director of the Finnish Design Museum. Previously he has acted with the establishment in the capacity of an deputy director and exhibition intendant.
Before that Savolainen worked as the director of research and information with the Material ConneXion company in New York.
He has a degree in art history from the University of St. Andrews and is completing a doctorate in design history at Kingston University in London.
The Finnish Design Museum is a national specialty museum, which collects and documents articles related to the design field.
The museum is also responsible for researching the field, documenting the field’s developments, and organising design exhibitions.
The Arabia Museum, the Iittala Glass Museum, and the Nuutajärvi Glass Museum all operate under the auspices of the Design Museum.
In Helsinki’s stint as the 2012 World Design Capital the Design Museum has a pivotal role.
