Kiasma, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, has announced that its most important exhibition in 2010, which was to present works by Isaac Julien, is to be cancelled.

Isaac Julien (b. 1960) is one of the foremost contemporary artists today. His video installations make versatile use of film, dance, theatre, music and visual art, and he is one of the most original voices on the contemporary art scene.
The exhibition in Kiasma was supposed to focus on Julien's most recent work on the themes of race, history and identity, as well as contemporary global issues, such as immigration.
The exhibition in Kiasma was scheduled for the autumn of 2010, and it was to occupy the 4th and 5th floors at Kiasma from mid-September to early December.

”The Finnish National Gallery has ordered us to cut our costs”, says Pirkko Siitari, the acting director of Kiasma.
”Now we will be able to balance our budget”, she adds.
Another underlying factor behind the cancellation was the fact that the corporate financing that was planned to support the exhibition did not materialise.

The gap in the calendar will be covered by expanding the upcoming Damien Hirst exhibition that is to be shown at Kiasma’s Studio K.
Damien Hirst (b. 1965) is an internationally renowned English artist who is the most prominent member of the group known as ”Young British Artists”.
”Alongside Hirst’s works we will be placing some pieces from artists by whom Hirst has been influenced”, Siitari notes.
