
King of Sweden and Vladimir Putin to attend Baltic Sea Action Summit in Helsinki
More than a hundred pledges received from businesses and public corporations to help threatened Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea Action Summit to convene in Helsinki on February 10th will attract high-level representatives from all ten Baltic Sea countries.
Seven of the participants are heads of state or prime ministers. In addition to them, the summit held in the Finlandia Hall will be attended by dozens of NGOs and businesses.
Sweden will be represented by His Majesty the King Carl XVI Gustaf , and Russia by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
Latvian President Valdis Zatlers, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, and Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will also be attending.
German Minister of Agriculture Ilse Aigner, Polish deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak and European Commissioner designate for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn have also confirmed they will be coming to Helsinki.
The Baltic Sea Action Summit will be hosted by the President of the Republic Tarja Halonen, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, and the Chairman of the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) Ilkka Herlin.
The aim of the summit is to bring together the public and private players operating in the area and for them to commit themselves to concrete measures to the benefit of the Baltic Sea.
Making a commitment is a prerequisite for the participation in the summit.
By Monday evening the organisers had already received no less than 117 pledges from various operators within the ten Baltic Sea states.
Help has been promised with regard to all the problem areas the Baltic Sea is currently facing, such as eutrophication, risks related to sea traffic, and the handling of hazardous substances.
