The blue-green algae situation in Finnish territorial waters has improved somewhat. In the inland lakes, on the other hand, there is slightly more algae than last week. But even with the lakes, the amount of algae is around the seasonal average.
Strong winds have dispersed the blue-green algae rafts in the Baltic, and stirred the algae back into the water. In the coastal and archipelago areas there may still be some algae on the surface.
Of the inland lakes, large algae occurrences continue to trouble Onkivesi in Lapinlahti, Suuri Vehkajärvi in Kerimäki, and Littoistenjärvi in Kaarina.
In the sea areas there are still algae rafts in evidence around the island of Simsalö in Sipoo.
Toxic blue-green algae often appears in the Gulf of Finland and other parts of the Baltic Sea in warm summers. Its growth is encouraged by phosphorous in the sea, and the algae adds to the problem of eutrophication by extracting nitrogen from the air.
