Lorry turns over on icy highway, spilling 30 tons of fish
About 30 tons of Baltic herring spilled onto a road from an overturned lorry in Sauvo in the southwest of Finland on Sunday.
Nobody was hurt in the accident.
“There is a layer of herring 20 to 30 centimetres deep over a distance of 250 metres. The entire road is closed”, said local fire chief Reijo Salminen.
The vehicle overturned on the Kemiö road at 3:30 in the afternoon. The accident was attributed to black ice on the road.
“The fish will be shovelled and pushed to the side of the road during the evening. On Monday when there is daylight they will be taken away, probably to a landfill site”, Salminen said.
“We all smell like herring”, he added after the effort to clear the road of fish.
