Lucky escape for backpacker in Nuuksio National Park
Espoo rescue services were called out on Sunday afternoon to rescue a man who was dangling over the edge of a rock precipice in the Nuuksio National Park.
The man, a foreigner, had been climbing over rocks at around 16:30, when he had slipped on some moss and slid downwards towards a sheer drop of around seven metres.
By an astonishing stroke of good fortune more commonly found in adventure movies, just before he tumbled over the edge his rucksack caught on a protruding root and he was left hanging by the strap.
The man began to call loudly for help in English.
His cries were heard and the rescue services were called to the scene, near Kattila.
Firemen climbed up the rock face to a position above the man and dropped ropes to him. He was then hoisted to solid ground and safety.
The man was uninjured, though one expects that such an experience is likely to disrupt one’s composure more than a little.
