MTK ready to burn crops for energy
Cereal crops may be used as raw material for energy plants in the near future. The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK) is currently looking into the possibility of using crops for energy production as the price of grain has plummeted.
In addition, this year’s grain harvest is looking to be exceptionally good, and yet there is still unsold produce from last year as well.
MTK President Juha Marttila believes that there will be interest in buying crops, because especially those power plants that use wood chips have had problems securing their supply of raw material with the standstill in the timber trade.
In any case, thousands of tons of low quality crops are burned each year, explains Cereals SecretaryMax Schulman of MTK.
Schulman considers the selling of crops as fuel a good alternative.
“For the farmers this produces cost savings, as the burned crops do not have to be dried first.”
