A recording of music by composer Magnus Lindberg, performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and clarinet soloist Kari Kriikku and conducted by Sakari Oramo was one of the winners of this year’s prestigious Classic FM Gramophone Awards.
The recording, a joint production of the Ondine record company and the Finnish Broadcasting Company, contains Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto as well as the pieces Gran Duo and Chorale.
The Gramophone Awards are given out annually by the British Gramophone magazine, considered to be the leading classical music publication. The awards have been called the "Oscars of the classical music industry".
Gramophone used to give out 15 prizes each year. Three years ago, the number was reduced to six. The winners are chosen by a panel of music journalists, critics, and other professionals.
"This is certainly wonderful for both Lindberg and Kriikku", says Ondine CEO Reijo Kiilunen. For Ondine it is particularly important, as it is the only small independent record label to win a Gramophone Award this year.
Ondine’s Lindberg recording has also won a number of other important music accolades. Last year it got the BBC Music Magazines Prize for orchestral music. Kiilunen is pleased that a prize from a competing publication was not an impediment for the most recent award.
Ondine’s Lindberg recording has attracted attention in classical music circles around the world - even in China, where Gramophone has started to publish its own localised edition.
