The Malmi Airport, which the City of Helsinki has long had in its sights with a view to turning over the land for development, will host a large air display in August, featuring visits from aerobatics teams, special planes, and flights for the public.
The Finnish Aeronautical Association (FAA) will be culminating the celebrations of its 80th birthday this year with a large public showcase just before the schools go back after the summer vacation, on the weekend of August 15th and 16th.
The event's promoters Speed Promotions will also be putting on a rock concert to round off the Saturday air display.
The Helsinki International Airshow will continue on the Sunday.
Promoter Kalle Keskinen is expecting around 85,000 people might attend on the two days.
The Finnish Air Force will be bringing its F-18 Hornet fighters, and also the FAF's aerobatics team, the Midnight Hawks, flying BAe Hawk 51s.
A number of other foreign air display teams have been invited, and it is hoped that since the show is just a week before a major aviation event in Moscow, the handy timing may increase the attractiveness of the Helsinki gathering.
