Man and woman shot dead by woman's ex-husband near Jyväskylä
Suspect surrenders later to police
A man in the village of Kuohu in Petäjävesi near Jyväskylä is suspected in the shooting deaths of his former wife and a man who was on the scene at about noon on Friday.
The suspected shooter left the farmhouse where the shooting occurred soon after the shots were fired and before the police reached the area.
An extensive manhunt was launched to find the shooter. After a risk assessment, the police asked the Defence Forces for assistance, and were provided with a Pasi armoured personnel carrier. Local residents were advised to stay indoors.
Later in the day the 59-year-old suspect surrendered to police in Jyväskylä.
Police said that they have possession of the unlicensed shotgun that was used in the killings.
In police questioning the man said that he had come to his wife’s farm to discuss debt issues. He also had issues to discuss with a man living there.
The two men confronted each other in the yard where words and blows were exchanged. The other man fled inside, at which point the suspect retrieved a shotgun from his car and went in after the man.
Police say that the suspect saw his former wife inside and shot her. The other man fled to the yard of a neighbouring farm. The suspect followed and shot him as well. The victims died immediately.
