Former World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm (Peugeot) stuck to his plan to avoid risks and with some careful driving he secured second place in Sunday's last leg of the Corona Rally Mexico.
The winner, Norwegian Petter Solberg (Subaru), also took took the lead in the drivers' championship with 20 points. Grönholm has so far accumulated 12 points in all.
"I had no other choice but to drive sensibly. I had problems with my brakes", Grönholm commented.
Grönholm's Peugeot teammate, Estonian Markko Märtin, came in third, while the reigning world champion Sebastian Loeb, whose Citroen lost a rear wheel on Friday, finally climbed to fourth place after posting the fastest times on both of the Sunday special stages.
Another Finn, Mitsubishi pilot Harri Rovanperä, took fifth place ahead of Ford's Toni Gardemeister. Gardemeister is in third place in the overall standings, with 17 points from the three rallies so far. The next WRC competition will be in New Zealand in early April.
