Metro axe-attack victim dies in hospital
The 23-year-old man who was attacked by a fellow passenger in a Helsinki metro train last week died of his wounds in hospital on Monday afternoon.
The man was struck three times in the head with the sharp side of an axe-blade. The assailant, a 36-year-old Helsinki man, has admitted the attack, and he is being held on manslaughter charges.
The motive for the crime, which has left locals deeply shocked, remains unclear. The alleged perpetrator has a history of mental illness. He apparently chose his victim completely at random, and the two men had no previous connection. Just over a year ago, the man underwent a psychiatric examination in connection with the trial of a property crime. At that time he was found guilty with diminished responsibility.
