Mika Kallio, riding for Red Bull KTM in the 125 cc class of the Road Racing World Championship, took his first victory of the season and the fifth of his career so far in Shanghai on Sunday.
Kallio enjoyed a perfect Mother's Day weekend: he was fastest in both practice sessions, started from pole position on the grid, and pulled off a neat last-lap victory to win the Grand Prix ahead of his closest rival in the title race.
The win hauls Kallio up into second place in the riders' standings, behind leader Alvaro Bautista of Spain. Bautista (3rd in Shanghai) has 86 points to Kallio's 58, so there is still a lot of work to be done, but the 23-year-old Finnish rider is handily placed to improve on his performance of last season, when he was runner-up in the 125 cc class.
The motorcyclists now return to Europe, for the French Grand Prix at Le Mans this coming weekend.
