Most young doctors seek employment in Province of Uusimaa
According to statistics released by the Finnish Medical Association, as many as one in three new physicians will seek employment in the province of Uusimaa soon after graduation.
Of those who have not studied at the University of Helsinki, the most eager to head for the southern part of the country are the graduates of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kuopio.
Apart from Helsinki and Kuopio, medical education is given in Turku, Tampere, and Oulu. The basic medical education lasts for six or seven years and leads to the degree of Licentiate of Medicine.
For the time being, the majority of the graduates of all Finnish universities will stay in the province in which they studied, while the next largest group consists of those who leave in order to seek employment in Uusimaa.
After Uusimaa, the regions attracting the next largest number of young physicians include Oulu, Southwestern Finland, and Pirkanmaa around Tampere. Each of them manages to employ a good ten per cent of all young doctors.
In international comparison, physician density is high in Finland, with one physician of working age per 300 inhabitants. Annually more than 500 new physicians graduate in Finland.
However, in the provinces of Savo, Kainuu, and Lapland the municipalities are having trouble filling the doctors' vacancies, even though doctors are being sought even by promising them a good salary and a number of benefits.
In the future, the leasing of doctors is predicted to become a natural part of the labour market.
