Digital TV takes over in exactly a year

Several more foreign pay-TV channels are set to become available to Finns next year, when Finland completely switches over to digital television.
A number of new operating licences are to be distributed by November this year, and all of them could be granted to applicants who charge for subscriptions.
Licences are to be granted to between five and seven new channels. In addition, MTV3 plans to make its present MTV3+ channel a subscription-only channel, possibly already this year.
According to Ismo Kosonen, head of the media unit of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the trend in Finland is following that of Sweden, where television channels fall into three categories: free channels, those that cost a little, and expensive channels, with programming including first-run movies.
Finland will completely switch over to digital television broadcasting exactly a year from now. Only about 50 percent of Finns have a digital television, or a digital decoder.
