Construction workers found the mummified corpse of a man in the disused chimney of an industrial building in Vantaa’s district of Veromies on Sunday.
The body was found in the 12-metre-high chimney when the building was being demolished.

The police are almost certain about the identity of the man, but at this stage it cannot be formally confirmed.
The police think that the deceased could be a Helsinki resident who disappeared in November 1991.
The Helsinki Criminal Police were searching for the then 38-year-old man without success at the end of 1991.
The man was last seen on Tolarintie in Helsinki’s district of Haaga, from where he was to go to Marsinkuja in Vantaa. However, he never arrived at his destination..
The man was declared dead in 2002. He was known to police and had been convicted of crimes against property.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Inspector Juha Juurinen from the Itä-Uusimaa Police District, reports that all lines of the investigation remain open for the time being.
The police have not ruled out the possibility that the death was suicide or a homicide.
”We hope that an autopsy will give us more accurate information about the cause of death and other details”, Juurinen noted.
The results of forensic investigations are expected later on this week.

Modern technology makes it easier to clear up even old crimes, but DI Juurinen was sceptical about unravelling the entire chain of events that eventually led to the death of the man.
”Even the surroundings have changed considerably since those days. At that time, neither the Jumbo shopping centre nor the nearby motorway existed, which is why the region was much quieter at the time of the incident”, Juurinen argued.
The chimney-stack in question is a part of the property serviced by Lassila & Tikanoja, a company specialising in environmental management and property and plant support services.
The chimney has not been used for some 20 years, and the police believe that it had been removed from service already at the time of the incident.
