NATO would cost Finland EUR 70 million a year
Membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would cost Finland 70 million euros a year, according to the newspapers Etelä-Suomen Sanomat and Satakunnan Kansa.
The expenses have been calculated at the Ministry of Defence. The sum would be in addition to the EUR 2,000 million defence budget, says the new Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Kai Rimpi.
Rimpi argues that the credibility of the Finnish Defence Forces is at risk due to budget cutbacks.
The aim is to save 20 million euros a year. By way of example, he notes that only 5,000 reservists will be called in this year for military refresher courses, when the FDF's target figure is 25,000 men.
