The Finnish government has appointed the National Coalition Party MP Jari Koskinen, 48, as a member of the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Koskinen’s term in London will commence at the beginning of September and end in May of 2012.
The appointment is based on the rotation system agreed on by the owner-states of the bank.
In the Board of Directors a Finnish and a Norwegian member serve on alternate terms. The Board has 23 members.

Koskinen has previous banking experience from the city of Hämeenlinna, where he acted as the manager and securities chief of the Hämeenlinnan Seudun Osuuspankki bank in the 1980s.
Koskinen was first voted into the Finnish Parliament in 1996.
As a National Coalition MP from the Province of Häme, Koskinen followed Iiro Viinanen, who has acted among other things as the Minister of Finance.
Koskinen served as Minister of Agriculture in the second Cabinet of Paavo Lipponen from May 2002 until the end of the electoral term in 2003.

Previous National Coalition Party members with notable achievements in the international banking field include former President J. K. Paasikivi, Raimo Ilaskivi, and the current Speaker of Parliament and former European Investment Bank Director Sauli Niinistö.
In Parliament, Koskinen will be replaced by the Orimattila City Council chairman Kalle Jokinen, 47.

The EBRD was set up in 1991.
Its main purpose is to support the economic development in the former communist states of Eastern and Central Europe and Central Asia. The EBRD has a solid capital base with a subscribed capital totalling EUR 20 billion.
The EBRD has regional offices in 34 countries. The head office is located in London.
The bank’s operation has a political undertone, for according to its charter the EBRD operates only in democratically-led countries.
The EBRD is owned by 61 countries and two international organisations. Its current President is German Thomas Mirow.
