National Coalition Party leader perplexed by Kanerva SMS message uproar
The latest controversy over claims that Minister for Foreign Affairs Ilkka Kanerva (Nat. Coalition Party) had bombarded a young woman dancer with SMS messages has left the party’s chairman, Minister of Finance Jyrki Katainen (Nat. Coalition Party) "perplexed".
The weekly gossip magazine Hymy recently wrote about a young woman who says that she had received 200 mobile phone text messages from Kanerva. The woman has been described in the tabloid press as an "erotic dancer". Kanerva has denied the claims.
Interviewed by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) on Sunday, Katainen said that he does not know if the claims are true. He emphasised, however, that nothing illegal has taken place.
Katainen would not say if he would take up the issue with Kanerva. He said that everything depends on Kanerva himself.
Three years ago Katainen had discussions with Kanerva on a similar matter.
Kanerva’s aides said that the Foreign Minister has made a policy decision not to comment on such stories in public.
On Friday he told the Swedish-language news department of YLE that there was no foundation to the report.
In Saturday’s edition of the late-edition tabloid Iltalehti, the woman in question said that she can prove that she received the messages from Kanerva.
