Negotiators seeking an end to the labour conflict in the Finnish Frontier Guard said that they had reached a settlement on Wednesday morning. Talks between the Finnish Frontier Guard and the Guards’ Union resumed at nine in the morning, and agreement had been reached two hours later.
On Tuesday, the union side had begun a strike affecting patrolling the southern part of the border with Russia.
The negotiators of both sides are to confer with their organisations, and give a final answer in the early afternoon.
There had been concerns that inadequate border security might compromise security at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics to be held in Helsinki later in the summer.
Parliament was prepared to convene during its summer recess in early July to push through special legislation that would have helped secure the borders if the strike were not settled before that.
The union side had turned down two mediation proposals by National Conciliator Juhani Salonius. Now both sides negotiated without resorting to the conciliator’s help.
