Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg, the new composer-in-residence at the New York Philharmonic, is to have a world première of a new commissioned work at the orchestra’s opening night gala at Avery Fisher Hall on September 16th.
This will be the first time for many decades when the Philharmonic’s opening night gala begins with a brand-new, never-before-heard piece written especially for the occasion.
The new work by Magnus Lindberg will be performed three times in New York and several times during the orchestra’s upcoming tour to Asia.
The season 2009-2010 will end with another première of a Lindberg composition in June 2010.
The 2009-2010 season will also feature two other works by Magnus Lindberg, namely the US first performance of his Clarinet Concerto with the Finnish clarinetist Kari Kriikku as soloist, and an airing of his 1995 work Arena for orchestra, piano and celesta.
In addition, Lindberg will help to curate the works to be performed in CONTACT, the New York Philharmonic’s contemporary music series. He will also conduct the opening concert of the series.
Alan Gilbert, the new Music Director of the New York Philharmonic and the former chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, will conduct Lindberg’s works.
Among the visiting conductors will also be the Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen. Salonen is scheduled to perform at the New York Philharmonic at the beginning of December.
